I read the bible for the 1st time about a year ago. Do you want to know what I came away with? The impression that a whole lot of people are really stupid. I did read it with an open mind, in case anyone tries to discount what I say.
First, when people say:such and such passage *proves* the coming of jesus was foretold!
I say: those who wrote the new testament had their copy of the old testament right in front of them(except "mark"), and they conformed their story to what suited their needs.
That explanation holds way more water than the "prophets" (who spoke of the impending arrival of the messiah)predicting that jesus would come. Jesus doesn't conform at all with the jewish sense of the messiah. Furthermore, why go to so much trouble linking Jesus with King David(via Joseph) if Mary is a perpetual virgin and Jesus was conceived strictly by god? Why does jesus have brothers and sisters from this "perpetual virgin."
The reason is simple: new testament writers desperately tried to link Jesus with the Old Testament for credibility. One must look at the history /writings of the early christian era to find out why christianity is the way it is, not only the bible. For instance, many people attacked Jerusalem/the temple and declared themselves the messiah in the years leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem. Yet Jesus, purveyor of astounding miracles, is not listed among them. Josephus(a jewish/roman historian) doesn't even mention Jesus-all references to him in the "antiquities" are later christian forgeries.
Finally, Pontius Pilate was removed by the roman gov't because he was far too brutal. Do you think he would try to save him, or feel guilty about sending him to his death? Not only that, but jews would have rioted had anyone been executed during the passover holiday. Finally, Paul and all the other early christians lived in a roman-ruled world. Many early christians hated the romans, but the gospels are clearly written to cater to them, and remove the mantle of responsibility for Jesus's death. Instead, they blamed the jews because they were on the romans shit list. Long story short, the gospels are not logical. The landmarks listed in Luke and Mark prove the writers didn't know Israeli geography, and were thus not disciples of the apostles(who would have been in close contact with them). John is extremely different from the so called synoptic gospels. Which is right? All of them? Give me a break. Don't give me simpering pseudo-moral generic quotes "I will pray for you" or "you need to have faith"- open your eyes. The gospel tells you to have faith and not ask questions for a very good reason:If you did, then you'd realize its just a tool of the status quo; the opiate of the masses. People can be moral without god, and while its somewhat immoral for me to assault your beliefs, let me remind you that your beliefs are responsible for millions of deaths across time.
So, please confront reality. It will eventually make you feel better, even though it sucks at first. The world is a crappy place. Why not work on it here instead of waiting to die to get some intangible reward? If people realized that we must rely on ourselves instead of some invisible spectre, then humanity would be much better off. thanks for listening to my rant, have a nice day(and open your eyes!)
